Summary of parashat Behar

At Mount Sinai, God communicates to Moses the laws of the Sabbatical year. Every seventh year, all work on the land must cease, and its produce must be left free for all to take, both human beings and animals.
Seven sabbatical cycles are followed by a fiftieth year, the jubilee year, in which work on the land also ceases, all servants are sent free, and ancestral properties in the Holy Land are returned to the possession of their original owners.
Behar also contains additional laws governing the sale of land, and prohibitions against fraud and usury.
