Two days after the mourning period for Moses' death ended in 1273 BCE, Joshua bin Nun sent two spies to the city of Jericho to gather logistical information in preparation for the conquest of the first city in the Land of Israel. This occurred on the 5th of Nisan.

The spies were Pinjas ben Elazar HaCohen and Kaleb ben Iefune.

Once in Jericho, they were helped by Rahab, a woman whose house was inside the city walls. Rahab later married Joshua.
