\"\"The Yom Kippur Torah reading describes the service conducted on this day by the Cohen Gadol (High Priest) in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem.<\/p>\n

One of the special features of the Yom Kippur service was the determination, through a lottery, of which of two lambs (of equal age, size and appearance) would be offered to God in the Temple and which would bear the sins of the Jewish people.<\/p>\n

The climax of the service was when the High Priest entered the innermost chamber of the Temple, the Holy of Holies. Dressed in white linen robes, the High Priest entered the holy place with a long shovel full of burning coals in his right hand and a spoon containing a handful of incense in his left. Inside the room, he placed the incense on the coals, waited for the room to fill with the fragrant smoke, and then withdrew.<\/p>\n

"This will be an eternal rule for you," the Torah reading concludes. "...for on this day He will forgive you, to purify you, to cleanse you from all your sins before God... once a year.".<\/p>\n

During the afternoon prayer, Mincha, we read chapter 18 of Leviticus, which details the prohibitions against incest and other improper sexual behavior.
