\u201cThe land will be divided only by lot\u201d (Bamidbar 26:55).
\nOne of the themes of this week's Torah portion is the division of the Land of Israel among the tribes of the Jewish people. The Torah tells us that this division of the land was carried out according to a lottery, as it is written, "The land shall be divided by lot." Every physical aspect of the world has a spiritual counterpart. The truth is that the physical dimension is a derivative of the spiritual. In turn, every aspect has an application in our service to the Creator. From this, it follows that the division of the Land of Israel (physical) corresponds to and arises from a spiritual division. The concept of this spiritual division, in relation to our Divine service, is the choice of the path to follow in each person's service to the Almighty. The verse indicates that this choice is "according to a lottery." A lottery symbolizes that which transcends intellect and reason.<\/p>\n
We must understand: What does it mean that the choice of the path to follow in our service to God is \u201caccording to a lottery\u201d (above logic and reason)? It is true that the basis<\/b> The service of God is submission to His Will, the basis of which is setting aside the intellect; however, this is only the basis<\/b>. When one is at the beginning of one's service to God and must choose what to do and what not to do, the criterion should be that of the Torah, that is, the choice should be internalized in the intellect and reason.<\/p>\n
To understand the answer, we must first understand that, although every Jew must fulfill all the Divine commandments, each individual has specific commandments that relate particularly to them. This relationship between the Jew and the commandments is not based on intellect, in such a way that one rationally feels a connection to this or that Divine commandment, but rather it is a relationship that transcends logic, a kind of "lottery.".<\/p>\n
This is why, when one perceives that a certain precept is extremely difficult to fulfill, this very fact is proof of one's special relationship with it. Even if one sees no logical connection with this particular precept\u2014quite the contrary, one feels that it is more difficult than others\u2014this precept is nevertheless his<\/b> This particular precept is the one through which all other good deeds are elevated to the Almighty. Therefore, when faced with difficulty, one should not abandon this precept and adopt an easier one; rather, one should strive to fulfill this precept, for it is the one most closely related to it.<\/p>\n
This will help us understand why it is written, \u201cThe land will be divided by lot\u201d: In the Land of Israel, there are different types of terrain\u2014mountains, valleys, plains, etc. The division of the physical land\u2014the fact that one tribe received the mountains, another the valleys, another the plains, and so on\u2014is due to that tribe's particular relationship with that specific aspect of the spiritual Land of Israel. This relationship transcends logic and is expressed in the physical world through a \u201clottery.\u201d.<\/p>\n
The lesson we learn here is that each person has a particular Torah matter that relates to them in a special way. Regardless of the difficulties that may arise along the way\u2014quite the contrary, as mentioned earlier, the very fact that difficulties arise in this area proves that this precept is fundamental to oneself, and one must strive to overcome oneself and uphold this precept, through which all other actions will be elevated.<\/p>\n
