Havdalah signifies separation\u2014between light and darkness, between the holy and the mundane.<\/p>\n<p>This is a multisensory ceremony. If there is a group, one person recites it while the rest of the participants respond &quot;Amen&quot; to each blessing. You will need a glass, wine or grape juice, a candle (with several wicks, if possible), and aromatic herbs.<\/p>\n<p>The cup is filled to overflowing, raised in the right hand (unless one is left-handed), and the preliminary verses are recited. Then the blessing over the wine is said, and the cup is placed on the table. The aromatic herbs are taken, the blessing is recited, and their fragrance is inhaled. These should be passed to the other people present so they too can enjoy the aroma. The fragrance brings joy to the soul after Shabbat has ended.<\/p>\n<p>The blessing over the light is recited, and everyone examines their fingernails in the candlelight. Our sages recount that the first man discovered fire at the end of the first Shabbat of creation.<\/p>\n<p>The cup is raised again, the Havdalah blessing is recited, and then the wine is drunk. It is customary to extinguish the candle with the remaining wine in the cup.
