In this week's Torah portion (called Shlach \u2013 Send), we read the story of the spies. In short, it concerns a group of twelve people whom Moses, at the request of the people, chose to travel throughout the Land of Israel and bring back a report on its qualities and the qualities of the people who inhabited it. They went, traveled the Land for forty days, gathered its produce, and returned with an impressive report: the Land was indeed special, as God had said, but, according to their logic, it was impossible to conquer. Only two of them (Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh) said that it could be conquered.<\/p>\n
The story ends with the death of the ten spies whose report was negative and the sealing, so to speak, of the decree to wander in the desert for forty years (From the story of the spies, thirty-eight. The number forty is from the departure from Egypt).<\/p>\n
There are many explanations of what happened, both in the world of Pshat (simple meaning) and in the world of Remez (indications), Drush (allegories) and Sod (Esotericism).<\/p>\n
One key takeaway: Moses never tells the twelve chosen ones that they should spy on the Earth, but rather that they should travel across it. The difference between spying and traveling lies in the fact that someone who spies secretly seeks out a place's weaknesses and ways to conquer it, always careful not to reveal their true intentions. On the other hand, someone who travels does so only to observe and learn about a place, without, so to speak, ulterior motives or hidden motivations.<\/p>\n
After being chosen by Moshe as the twelve best people to carry out the work of traveling the Earth, ten of them saw themselves as spies, that is, they carried in their hearts the ability to hide their true intentions in order to act one way and feel and think another.<\/p>\n
When Moshe realized that the chosen men could come to think of themselves as spies, he prayed that his student Joshua bin Nun would not be influenced by their advice (for Calev it was not necessary to pray, since Moshe knew that he could remain true to his true mission).<\/p>\n
