The kitchen is not generally thought of as a sacred place. However, eating, when done with the proper intention, is a sacred act that involves all kitchen utensils as divine instruments. This explains why they must be immersed in a mikveh, a ritual bath, before being used.<\/p>\n
All utensils that come into contact with food or drink must be submerged. This includes strainers, glasses, and food processor blades. If an item does not come into contact with prepared food (such as a meat grinder or mixing bowl), it is submerged without saying a blessing.<\/p>\n
Utensils to be submerged are those made of metal and glass. Those made of wood, stone, paper, bone, ceramic, plastic, or disposable items do not need to be submerged.<\/p>\n
This refers to new utensils; those that have already been used with non-kosher food must first go through a koshering process.<\/p>\n
Before immersing the utensils, all labels and anything else that might prevent the water from reaching any part of the vessel must be removed.
