These days we are experiencing extreme and opposing weather phenomena all over the world: while the northern hemisphere suffers from chilling frosts that paralyze airports and other means of transport, the southern hemisphere (at least in Argentina) experiences days of intense heat.<\/p>\n
Of course, as we have mentioned many times, every matter in daily life has a lesson to teach us in our service to God. To understand this lesson, we must first consider the concept of cold and heat in our service to God.<\/p>\n
God established a system for the functioning of the universe, centered on the concealment and revelation of His presence. In creation itself, God created a light, which was a symbol of His presence, but He immediately concealed it. Humanity's spiritual work, called "service to God," consists of revealing that light hidden behind layers and layers of "reality"\u2014that is, the world as we know it conceals God's presence.<\/p>\n
Continuing with the description of the system, God gives man the ability to choose between giving his life to "reality," that is, to the material world and vain pleasures, or dedicating his life to revealing God within that reality, that is, showing how God is involved in every aspect of life. (It should be clarified that this choice is a constant action; at every step man takes, he must again choose between "good" and "evil.").<\/p>\n
Now, cold represents indifference, while heat represents passion. These qualities can be used in two ways: indifference to reality, that is, to the material world and its fleeting pleasures, or indifference to the divine light hidden within creation. The same applies to passion; a person can have passion for God or passion for football...<\/p>\n
While both cold and heat are important, in their extreme forms they can be harmful. The same is true of their spiritual counterparts, indifference and passion. A person cannot be completely indifferent to the world around them and passionate only about Torah; nor can they be completely indifferent to spiritual matters and passionate only about the fleeting pleasures of the world.<\/p>\n
Our sages always preached that a balance of forces is the best path to personal fulfillment and thus to leading the world to fulfill its purpose.
