It's a long list (53 precepts!) that mostly deal with laws regulating relationships between people. For example, not lying, not stealing, paying for damages caused, etc.

The legislation that arises from these verses is so extensive that our sages dedicated entire chapters of the Talmud to express all the details that emerge from the bare words of each verse, or sometimes from letters, and sometimes even from commas between the words.

Now, instead of focusing on a particular precept, it seemed important to me, as an introduction to the study of any Torah precept, to understand the approach with which Hasidic thought analyzes every issue, even the most mundane issues such as someone who publicly shamed another.

There are two types of precepts: 1) Precepts that shape life, 2) Precepts that are created by life. Precepts of type 2, those created by man, vary from place to place and from time to time, according to the particular conditions of a land and the conditions of the moment in history in which the law must be applied.

On the other hand, the Torah of Hashem is the Divine law that gives life. The Torah of Hashem is true, meaning it is the same in all places and at all times, regardless of the conditions under which a person finds themselves; the laws of the Torah are the same.

Moreover, one of the fundamental tenets of Judaism (according to Maimonides) is that the Torah will never change. Its precepts and laws will eternally remain the same.

What does it mean that the precepts of the Torah become life? The simplest way to understand it is that God's precepts shape our lives, giving them a specific context and form that doesn't change with time or place. In fact, beyond variations according to customs, the same observance of precepts can be found in the most remote and isolated places on earth. For example, on Passover, everyone gathers to eat matzah, whether in India, the Congo, or Argentina. Thus, the Torah becomes life.

Another way to understand it is that the person who follows them is connected to the true Source of Life, which is God. The very concept of a precept, in Hebrew Mitzvah, can be understood by analyzing it from its root in the Aramaic word Tzavta, which means union: a Mitzvah creates a union between the Commandant (God) and the Commanded (Man). Thus, the Torah constitutes life itself.

However it is explained, the common denominator is the same: the Mishpatim section teaches us that even the most "worldly", "human" and "common" laws are of Divine origin.

La sección de esta semana se llama Mishpatím (leyes).
