This week's section, entitled Behar (on the mountain), discusses, among other topics, the laws regarding the sale of land in the Land of Israel. While these laws were not applicable when they were written (since the Jewish people were in the desert), they regulated private property and allowed each tribe to retain its ancestral inheritance. This was achieved through the concept of the Yovel, the fiftieth year, in which the lands reverted to their original owners. (These rules are not in effect today.).<\/p>\n
En medio del relato, la Tor\u00e1 trae un vers\u00edculo muy interesante, como explicando el por qu\u00e9 del precepto de devolver las tierras a los due\u00f1os originales (Vaikr\u00e1 25:23): \u00abY la tierra no ser\u00e1 vendida definitivamente, porque es M\u00eda toda la tierra, ya que extra\u00f1os (guer\u00edm) y habitantes (toshav\u00edm) ustedes son conmigo\u00bb. El significado simple del vers\u00edculo es que, dado que toda la tierra le pertenece a Di-s, no hay ninguna raz\u00f3n para considerarla propia de manera de no querer devolverla a su due\u00f1o original llegado el a\u00f1o de Iovel.<\/p>\n
However, as with all matters of the Torah, there is a deeper understanding of this verse, which can still be applied today, even if one cannot fulfill the commandment of Yovel.<\/p>\n
As an introduction, the word gerim in the Torah refers to a group of people living away from their homeland, strangers in a foreign land. On the other hand, the word toshavim refers to those who are permanently settled in their land.<\/p>\n
