Anniversary of the passing of Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneerson \u2013 6th Rebbe of Chabad \u2013 in 1950 in New York City. Also known as the Previous Rebbe. He was born in Lubavitch, Russia, on the 12th of Tammuz, 1880.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Furthermore, in 1951, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, son-in-law of the previous Rebbe, known throughout the world as The Rebbe, assumed the leadership of Chabad Lubavitch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Year after year this day is commemorated following different customs, such as visiting the resting places of the Rebbeim, studying the chapters of the Mishnah that begin with the letters of his name (of the previous Rebbe) and reviewing the last Hasidic discourse he wrote especially for the day of his passing (Bati leGani).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is a day of reconnection, to meditate on what links us to a leader of the Jewish people in general, and, in particular, to the leaders who shaped the course of world Jewry (and in many aspects of society in general) until the coming of Messiah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because in reality their teachings are not limited to Chabad or religious Jews, or even just the Jewish people. Their teachings are universal, and they are the only Jewish leaders who dedicated their lives to the well-being of all human beings, teaching by example and demonstrating how we can all be better people if only we wanted to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
