One of the most prominent topics in this week's section is the sin of the Golden Calf. Incited by a group of people whom Moses decided to accept as converts after the Exodus from Egypt (without God's guidance), the Jewish people ultimately fell into the sin of idolatry (avodah zarah in Hebrew).<\/p>\n
Uno de los ingredientes que m\u00e1s confunden todo este episodio es que el pueblo jud\u00edo hab\u00eda recibido la Tor\u00e1 en el Monte Sina\u00ed hace muy poco tiempo (desde el 6 de Siv\u00e1n, d\u00eda de la Entrega de la Tor\u00e1 hasta el 17 de Tamuz, d\u00eda del pecado en la pr\u00e1ctica, pasaron s\u00f3lo 40 d\u00edas…) habiendo sido testigos de grandes revelaciones de Di-s.<\/p>\n
There are many comments and explanations about what happened, from different perspectives, but we are going to focus on the practical aspects, how it affects us and what this story from the Torah teaches us (among other things).<\/p>\n
First, we must understand what avodah zarah, or idolatry, means. The concept of idolatry is the belief that anything in the universe, other than God, has authority over any matter beyond God's power. For example, it would be idolatry to believe that celestial bodies (the sun, the moon, the constellations, including the signs of the zodiac) have the ability to give or withhold energy from the world and, therefore, to pray to them or offer them something to obtain a benefit.<\/p>\n
However, there is something deeper and more subtle about idolatry, from two perspectives.<\/p>\n
1) Many people make their desires and longings objects of idolatry, like someone who gives their whole life in order to accumulate money; their god becomes money.<\/p>\n

En otras palabras, a\u00fan cuando la persona se encuentra en un buen camino, el camino de la Tor\u00e1 y las Mitzvot, estudi\u00f3 y aprendi\u00f3, pero dedica su tiempo a asuntos que est\u00e1n fuera del espectro del servicio a Di-s, al ser algo \u00abextra\u00f1o\u00bb a lo que se espera de esa persona, se vuelve \u00abtrabajo extra\u00f1o\u00bb, es decir, extra\u00f1o para el nivel espiritual en el cual se encuentra esa persona.<\/p>\n
Cada persona debe analizar su nivel, meditar en lo que se espera de \u00e9l o ella para detectar en su vida cu\u00e1les son sus \u00abtrabajos extra\u00f1os\u00bb.
