This week we begin the third book of the Torah, called Vayikra (and He called). Most of the commandments described in this book cannot be fulfilled in practice today because we do not have a Temple built. However, it is known that the Torah is eternal, meaning that its teachings are eternal, beyond space and time.<\/p>\n
The book begins by describing a series of offerings that a person would bring to the Temple in different circumstances, whether voluntary or mandatory offerings.<\/p>\n
Among the voluntary offerings there are two types: 1) animal offerings, which are further divided into offerings of sheep or birds (doves), and 2) vegetable offerings (flour). The Talmud refers to these offerings as a rich person's offering (sheep), a poor person's offering (bird), and an offering of extreme poverty (vegetable).<\/p>\n

Our sages learn from this that even if someone in extreme poverty offers the Temple only a measure of flour (insignificant compared to someone offering a sheep), God considers it as if they offered their entire life, their very soul. That is, regardless of the offering's value, if it is the maximum a person is able to give, God considers it as valuable (or even more so) than the offering of someone wealthy.<\/p>\n
Now, based on the above, let's analyze it a step further: why is someone who is extremely poor in that situation and, therefore, only able to bring a grain offering? In Judaism, there are no coincidences, and surely, the fact that a person finds themselves at a certain economic level is because that is what they deserve for their actions (without delving into the dilemma of Job, Moshe, and so many others about why the good suffer and the wicked prosper. Assuming a simple system of reward and punishment, those who are in a good situation deserve it, and those who are in a bad situation also deserve it.)<\/p>\n
Therefore, we might think that an offering of extreme poverty is not accepted by God: since the person is responsible for their own situation, they are guilty of only being able to offer flour, whereas if their actions had been better, they could have offered more. It follows that what they offer is not the true maximum of what they could give.<\/p>\n
