Cuando uno se dedica a ense\u00f1ar Tor\u00e1, y en particular a j\u00f3venes, es frecuente toparse con la pregunta de la ciencia y la Tor\u00e1. Aparentemente surge como un cuestionamiento v\u00e1lido y fuerte, ya que la ciencia plantea una serie de \u00abverdades\u00bb tan claras que la Tor\u00e1 no acepta (as\u00ed parece) y, autom\u00e1ticamente, las verdades de la Tor\u00e1 quedan refutadas.<\/p>\n
However, there are certain points to consider in order to understand how there really is no contradiction or questioning between science and the Torah, namely:<\/p>\n
1. Science deals with describing and predicting observable phenomena. To achieve this, many theories are proposed that attempt to define the rules behind these phenomena. Some theories are more famous and popular (such as the theory of evolution, the Big Bang, and Newton's Law of Universal Gravitation), while others are not.<\/p>\n
The key point here is understanding that these are all theories. Some describe observable reality better than others, but they are still theories that may be valid today and not tomorrow. They are not perceived as theories in general knowledge because they are not taught in schools or disseminated in the media as such, but rather as laws and realities.<\/p>\n
The Torah doesn't present theories, but facts. And these facts are based on God's revelation at Mount Sinai. And here we come to the second point:<\/p>\n
2. La ciencia utiliza los modelos necesarios para describir la realidad, por ejemplo el modelo at\u00f3mico, o la descripci\u00f3n del sistema solar centrado en el sol, mientras que la Tor\u00e1 utiliza otros modelos para definir la realidad, como que el sol y las estrellas giran en torno a la tierra, o la descripci\u00f3n Talm\u00fadica de la gestaci\u00f3n de un beb\u00e9, donde el padre pone lo \u00abrojo\u00bb y la madre \u00ablo blanco\u00bb, sea lo que fuere que quiere decir. Sin embargo no hay contradicci\u00f3n, simplemente se trata de diferentes formas de describir lo mismo. La raz\u00f3n de la diferencia radica en la utilidad que uno quiere darle a la descripci\u00f3n. Por ejemplo, si decimos que el hombre es el centro del universo (como plantea la Tor\u00e1) estamos diciendo, en otras palabras, que el hombre tiene una responsabilidad central y una misi\u00f3n fundamental en su vida, mientras que si el hombre simplemente se encuentra en alguna rec\u00f3ndita esquina de la V\u00eda L\u00e1ctea, \u00bfqui\u00e9n dice que hay alguna raz\u00f3n de ser, o que mis acciones son significativas? Entonces, para apoyar su perspectiva, la Tor\u00e1 plantea un sistema geoc\u00e9ntrico. Y lo mismo ocurre con cada uno de los conceptos \u00aba la antigua\u00bb que aparecen en la obras de nuestros sabios, son modelos descriptivos orientados a extraer una ense\u00f1anza en el servicio a Di-s y no modelos que s\u00f3lo describen la realidad, pero no ense\u00f1an nada.<\/p>\n
This brings us to the third point:<\/p>\n
3. The above does not reject all advances in different fields of technology, such as medicine and communications. The fact that a phenomenon is not described or its existence is not emphasized does not mean that it is not true in practice.<\/p>\n
Each field of knowledge utilizes the necessary resources to define its function. That is to say, our sages clearly did not see the need to investigate the effects of radio waves or electricity, which does not mean we cannot use those resources. Once defined and put into practice (in radio and television, cell phones, or a simple incandescent light bulb), they can be used by everyone for good, even by our sages who never dedicated themselves to developing those things.<\/p>\n
Esto es as\u00ed simplemente porque, como mencionado anteriormente, cada uno se ocupa de aquello que le es \u00fatil, y as\u00ed tenemos en la sabidur\u00eda jud\u00eda miles de libros de responsas rab\u00ednicas sobre qu\u00e9 bendici\u00f3n decir al comer un determinado producto, o profundos tratados sobre gram\u00e1tica del hebreo, mientras que no se encuentran muchas referencias sobre los agujeros negros y la f\u00edsica cu\u00e1ntica…<\/p>\n
All of this leads us to understand that there are no contradictions between science and the Torah; each simply has a different function and uses different tools.
