The month of Tishrei, which is the seventh month of the Jewish year, a month full of precepts and special days, is a month of gradual growth.<\/p>\n
At its beginning is Rosh Hashanah, the start of the year, when we declare God as King over us by sounding the Shofar. Then come the days called "Days of Repentance," a return to and drawing closer to God. After that comes Yom Kippur, a day of a clean slate, a day in which accepting God's reign over our lives leads us to realize that, in some ways, we have failed and must apologize (to God and to our fellow human beings).<\/p>\n
The festival of Sukkot continues, where the solemnity of the previous days transforms into a growing joy, day by day, with the guests in the Sukkah (both those mentioned in Kabbalah, as well as the Hasidic guests and, obviously, the flesh-and-blood guests!) and the four species, with their fresh fragrance and all the symbolism of the Jewish people's unity and connection with God that our Sages explain.<\/p>\n
Then comes Shmini Atzeret, which culminates in Simchat Torah, where the joy reaches its peak, where we rejoice that "You chose us from among all the nations," as the liturgy says. How? By giving us a Torah of life, with teachings for daily life at all times and in all places.<\/p>\n
So what happens when Tishrei ends? There's a general rule in all aspects of Judaism to always strive for holiness. It's not acceptable to have reached a certain level and then descend. You must always move forward. But the month of Tishrei has only thirty days. The holidays are over! How do you move forward after reaching the pinnacle of joy in God and His Torah? What's the next step?<\/p>\n
The custom is to announce in the synagogue, at the end of the last holiday of Tishrei, the verse "And Jacob went on his way" (Bereshit 32:2).<\/p>\n
This verse symbolizes the entire life of a Jew. After being charged with powerful energies throughout the holidays, a person is not expected to become a merely spiritual being and forget "their path"\u2014that is, to set aside their work and family and dedicate themselves exclusively to Torah study and prayer.<\/p>\n
Quite the opposite. It is expected of the Jew to use all the inspiration of the month of Tishrei in "his path," that is, that in his work, in his relationships with family and friends, etc., he applies everything he experienced in the past month: the reign of God (Rosh Hashanah), the approach to his neighbor beyond his merits (Ten Days of Repentance), the capacity to forgive (Yom Kippur), God's protection and joy in general (Sukkot), and, in particular, the immense happiness of being Jewish (Shmini Atzeret and Simchat Torah).<\/p>\n
Each of these concepts and all the others learned throughout the holidays should guide the person in their daily life, and this is the true continuation of the month of Tishrei, where there is no descent to a lower level but the opposite, a new challenge to overcome: that of filling everyday life with spirituality.<\/p>\n
