Among the many topics in this week's section is the story of the Second Passover (Pesach Sheni). In short, what happened was that when the time came to offer the Passover sacrifice, a group of people approached Moses and complained that they were ritually unclean from a dead body: "Why are we left out?" they demanded.<\/p>\n
In a normal situation, they wouldn't have been able to participate in the sacrifice, but this case was different: their purification process would end that very night, while the sacrifice had to be offered during the day. Their proposal was that someone else offer the sacrifice with them in mind, and they would eat it that night, once they were purified.<\/p>\n
Moses did not know the answer and consulted God about the matter. Then God gave a "new mitzvah," that of the Second Passover. This consists of allowing those who could not participate in Passover on its correct date (the 14th of Nisan at nightfall) to do so a month later (the 14th of Iyar at nightfall).<\/p>\n
From this event, we learn many laws in the Talmud and many teachings in general. To highlight at least one idea: the demand of a group of people apparently generated a "new" mitzvah. But mitzvot are the Will of God, which is immutable (in fact, even in the World to Come, the Messianic era, we will continue to perform mitzvot exactly as we know them today), so how could something entirely new have arisen from the request of a group of people? Did something change in the Will of God?<\/p>\n
Obviously not. One possible explanation is that the mitzvah of Pesach Sheni already existed before it was required, but it had not yet been revealed. This is similar to how our sages explain a person's sustenance, which is determined on Rosh Hashanah. However, it originates in the spiritual realm and manifests itself throughout the year, step by step, in its proper time and place.<\/p>\n
The same thing happens with the Mitzvah of Pesach Sheni: the demand of a group of people managed to reveal at that very moment what already existed.<\/p>\n
Therefore, this detail of the event opens a path for us and clearly shows how we should demand that God bring about Redemption: "Why are we left out?" If the Messiah and all the great Divine revelations of his time are already fixed and established in God's Will, let Him reveal them now!
