The first of Adar marked the beginning of the shekel collection. In commemoration of this, the Torah reading for the Shabbat before the Rosh Chodesh (beginning of the month) of Adar is supplemented with verses from Exodus 30:11-16, which recount the Divine commandment to Moses regarding the half-shekel offering.<\/p>\n<p><b>Parashat Zajor<\/b><br \/>Since this is the Shabbat before Purim, when we celebrate the annulment of Haman the Amalekite&#039;s plot to destroy the Jewish people, this week&#039;s section is supplemented with the reading of Zachor (remember) (Devarim 25:17-19) in which we are commanded to remember the wickedness of Amalek and eradicate it from the face of the earth.<\/p>\n<p><b>Parashat Para<\/b><br \/>The reading for this Shabbat is complemented by the Parah (cow) section in Devarim 19, which details the laws of &quot;The Red Heifer&quot; and the process by which a person ritually impure through contact with a dead body was purified.<br \/>When the Holy Temple in Jerusalem stood, every Jew had to be in a state of ritual purity to bring the Passover offering to the Temple. Today, while it is impossible for us to perform the Temple-related rituals in practice, we do so spiritually by studying the Torah laws that govern these rituals. That is why we study and read the Parah section in preparation for the Passover festival.<\/p>\n<p><b>Parashat HaChodesh<\/b><br \/>On the 1st of Nisan (when it falls on Shabbat) or the Shabbat before the 1st of Nisan, a special reading called &quot;HaChodesh&quot;\u2014the month\u2014from Exodus 12:1-20 is added to the regular reading. HaChodesh recounts God&#039;s historical communication with Moses in Egypt on the 1st of Nisan (two weeks before the Exodus) regarding the Jewish calendar, the month of Nisan, and the Passover offering.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Parashat Shekalim: When the Holy Temple stood in Jerusalem, every Jew contributed half a shekel annually to it.
