There is an interesting expression that appears in the holy books: emunah tehorah \u2013 pure faith. On the surface, the expression seems unremarkable; it simply refers to the faith that every Jew has in God. More specifically, it refers to faith in God's omnipresence and omnipotence. However, from a deeper perspective, faith signifies that God is indefinable, beyond the grasp of the human mind.<\/p>\n
Faith is that which transcends the intellect; that is, even those matters that the intellect does not grasp directly, it can understand indirectly. For example, through the negation of known adjectives, we can get an idea of something unknown (it is not such and such, not such and such, etc.).<\/p>\n
However, God surpasses and transcends even indirect knowledge. He is simply incomprehensible. This is true, pure faith.<\/p>\n
This expression refers to a specific level of faith that cannot be "impure," that is, influenced or altered, by a person's actions, words, and thoughts (and even less so by the environment). It is a level that always remains pure, just as it is at its source and primary root in the Jewish soul.<\/p>\n
This helps us understand why a person's Judaism does not depend on what they do or do not do, but is an immutable state: as the Talmud says, "A Jew, even though he sinned, continues to be a Jew.".<\/p>\n
(It should be clarified that this is not an excuse for not acting in accordance with the precepts of the Torah; we are saying that one does not lose their status as a Jew by acting wrongly, but in no way can it be said that it is the correct state of connection with God or of observance of Judaism).<\/p>\n
This also helps us understand how this fundamental aspect of being Jewish works: in moments when none of the paths the world offers work to solve a particular problem, when it's not about money, physical beauty, intellect, culture, athletic prowess, etc., when worldly tools run out, that's when the deepest part of being Jewish emerges, its connection with the Infinite, its Pure Faith that God transcends all limits, known and unknown, and we cry out to Him to help and save us.<\/p>\n
I think one of the most interesting points about this is that one might think that after denying and renouncing or ignoring one's Jewishness or Torah observance, one would be outside the circle of influence of the Torah, or that one would be looked down upon or ridiculed when attempting to return.<\/p>\n
The reality is that it's not like that: since Judaism transcends reason, rational rules don't apply to it, and as soon as one even thinks of returning, God opens His hands to receive them.
