The Baal Shem Tov is known for saying that one can learn something in service to God from everything one hears or sees.<\/p>\n
In addition to this, it's well known that children generally possess a purity and simplicity that allows them to be genuine. That is, young children say things as they see them, without disguising or masking them with adjectives that obscure reality or make it more palatable (or change it...) for the listener. For this reason, children are a constant source of learning for adults.<\/p>\n
As Rabbi Akiva, one of the greatest sages in Jewish history, used to say, I learned a lot from my teachers, but even more from my students.<\/p>\n
These past few days I've experienced something different, from which an interesting lesson can be learned. Whatever the reason, I spent a week alone with my five children, as my wife wasn't home. My oldest child is six years old. My youngest is one.<\/p>\n
Obviously, dealing with the basic needs (such as food, diapers, bathing, dressing, etc.) of five small children requires an enormous amount of patience, but that will be for another editorial.<\/p>\n
What I found surprising is that, beyond the fact that each child's needs combined to form a set of five needs that only one person could meet, each child required constant attention. In other words, the children had no interruptions.<\/p>\n
It never occurs to a boy to pause his activities to reflect or simply rest. The activity is constant. The demands are constant.<\/p>\n
One way to apply this to serving God is that service to God must be constant. There are no interruptions, meaning there are no moments when one "slacks off" and attends to "one's" own affairs.<\/p>\n
This does not mean that one does not have "one's" affairs, be it work, family, friends, etc., but the idea is that one makes those affairs part of the service to God by doing them for the sake of heaven or by making them part of a Mitzvah itself.<\/p>\n
All of this is based on the Hasidic concept of the oneness of God, where God and the world do not exist as two independent entities, but rather only God exists. Therefore, there is no room for anything outside of Him, for a separate and independent life.<\/p>\n
