Our sages explain that during the month of Elul (in which we now find ourselves) there is a revelation of divinity similar to that which occurs during Shabbat and the Festivals. These are days when Divine mercy illuminates every aspect of our lives, giving us the proper preparation for the festivals of the following month: Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, and so on.<\/p>\n
Now, if the energy of the month of Elul is the same as that of a Shabbat during the year, why don't we have a whole month of Shabbatot? Shouldn't we behave according to the rules of Shabbat during the 29 days of the month of Elul!<\/p>\n
Obviously not, and to explain the difference, the Alter Rebbe, the founder of the Chabad Lubavitch Movement, gave an example:<\/p>\n
When the King is in the countryside, with his entire entourage, walking towards the city, everyone can approach him to make requests, and the King receives them all with a cheerful countenance. However, when the King enters the city and arrives at his royal palace, only those privileged enough may enter and speak with him.<\/p>\n
The same thing happens during the month of Elul: "The King is in the field," which means that there is a revelation similar to that of a Shabbat and Yom Tov, but as if it were "somewhere else," not in the King's palace in all its splendor; that is, it is the same King, but in work clothes, so to speak.<\/p>\n
Similarly, access to the King while he is "in the countryside" is not the same as when he is in his palace\u2026<\/p>\n
However, it is not enough for the King himself to make himself accessible to his subjects; as we saw in the example, people must approach him to make their requests.<\/p>\n
The system God established for the universe is that there must first be an awakening and an initiative from the individual towards God, followed by a Divine response. In fact, this is one of the main ideas of Rosh Hashanah: at the beginning of creation, God created the entire universe of His own accord, without anyone awakening in Him the desire to create it. However, after having done so, He established that year after year we must, so to speak, renew the contract of the world, so God is waiting to see if we will awaken and generate in Him the will to create the world again or not (God forbid).<\/p>\n
During the month of Elul, we must understand that it is a time to awaken and correct all our actions, words, and thoughts that occurred throughout the year. This is the initiative expected of us, so that we may be rewarded with a year of success, both materially and spiritually, with blessings of health, children, and abundant sustenance.<\/p>\n
