After talking about the two souls that a Jew has, his \u201cTools\u201d (Intellect and Emotions), his \u201cClothing\u201d (thought, word and action) and what we do with them, the Alter Rebbe now explains what happens inside a Jew with all of this together.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although these two souls are spiritual (we cannot see or touch them), they work within the body by "living" in certain parts so that the body acts as they want.<\/p>\n

The \u201chouse\u201d, that is, the place where the Animal Soul \u201clives\u201d in the body, is the left side of the heart, and from there it sends orders to the whole body, including the brain, to think about the things it wants to do, say and think.<\/p>\n

The \u201chome\u201d of the Divine Soul is the brain in the head and from there it sends orders to the whole body, including the right side of the heart.<\/p>\n

(The heart is hollow. It has two main parts: the right ventricle, filled with blood that was used by the cells and goes to the lungs to be re-oxygenated.<\/p>\n

The Alter Rebbe calls this side "empty of blood" because it is blood that can no longer carry oxygen to the body and needs to be renewed. Furthermore, the left ventricle of the heart is filled with blood already oxygenated by the lungs, ready to be distributed throughout the body. The Animal Soul "lives" in the left side of the heart, while the Divine Soul reveals itself in the right side of the heart (the "empty of blood").<\/p>\n

An example of how the Animal Soul works: a person gets angry because they imagine or remember something, or because someone has hurt them. That feeling of anger comes from the Animal Soul that \u201clives\u201d in the left side of the heart. From there it spreads throughout the body, including the mind: the person may dwell on their anger, make faces because of it, say unpleasant things, or do unpleasant things, God forbid.<\/p>\n

The Divine Soul \u201clives\u201d in the brain. This soul uses the \u201cTools\u201d of the Intellect to think about Hashem<\/i>, For example. From there, that idea spreads to the rest of the body to say something (for example, a psalm) or do something (for example, a Mitzvah<\/i>The ideas of the Divine Soul also reach the right side of the heart, making us feel, for example, love and fear of Hashem<\/i>.<\/p>\n

In summary: the Animal Soul \u201clives\u201d in the left side of the heart and sends its information to the brain, from the bottom up. The Divine Soul \u201clives\u201d in the brain and sends its information to the right side of the heart, from the top down.<\/p>\n

Then the Alter Rebbe explains how these two souls interact with an example: there is a city over which two kings are fighting to rule. Each wants to rule it, so each will say that he is the king and therefore everyone must obey him.<\/p>\n

The two kings are the two souls. The city is the body. The Divine Soul wants to be the sole ruler, so that the whole body listens to it and uses its intellect only to think about it. Hashem<\/i> and the Torah<\/i>, feel only love and fear of Hashem<\/i> (and not love for other things, like cake\u2026) and only do Mitzvot<\/i>.<\/p>\n

He also wants the Animal Soul to obey him, even to the point of dominating and transforming every part and detail of the Animal Soul so that they work exclusively for his benefit. Hashem<\/i>.<\/p>\n

But\u2026 the Animal Soul wants the same thing! To be the sole ruler, to control the entire body and have it obeyed. They're always fighting\u2026<\/p>\n

The truth is that Hashem<\/i> He gave us the "other king," the Animal Soul, to make us stronger. It's like a teacher who gives increasingly difficult assignments with the idea that we learn more, improve ourselves, and reveal our true potential. We might think the teacher is bad and against us, but in reality, he's just doing his job of helping us learn more and become stronger in the subject he teaches.<\/p>\n
