Regarding verse 1, \"In the six hundredth year of Noah\u2019s life\u2026 all the springs of the great deep burst forth, and all the windows of heaven were opened,\" quoted in our Parashah, the book Zohar says: \"In the sixth century of the sixth millennium, the gates of wisdom above and the springs of wisdom below will be opened, and the world will be conditioned to enter the seventh millennium.\" It turns out, then, that the Zohar speaks of two types of revelations that will take place in the time of the sixth century of the sixth millennium: one is the revelation of the gates of wisdom above,\" which refers to the wisdom of the Torah, and the other is the revelation of \"the springs of wisdom below,\" which are the natural and world sciences.<\/p>\n
PREPARATION FOR THE MESSIAH<\/p>\n
During that era, prophesied in the Zohar (a period beginning in the sixth century of the sixth millennium of the Hebrew calendar, i.e., in the year 5500*), an extraordinary revelation of wisdom began in the world. The wisdom of the Torah was revealed and began to spread, as did the teachings of Hasidism, the inner part of the Torah ("pnimiut HaTorah"); and the wisdom of the world ushered in an era of intense and rapid scientific development.<\/p>\n
What requires explanation here is this: The Zohar states that through the revelation of these wisdoms, the world will be prepared for its entry into the seventh millennium and the days of the Messiah. It is easily understood that the revelation of the inner dimension of the Torah is a preparation for the days of the Messiah, since then the Earth will be filled with "the knowledge of God as the waters cover the sea,"3 and the inner dimension of the Torah that speaks of "the knowledge of God" is a kind of preparation for this. But what is the relationship between the development of science and the days of the Messiah?<\/p>\n
LET THE FLESH ITSELF SEE<\/p>\n
Among the fundamental themes that will be innovated in the days of the Messiah is the fulfillment of the promise4 of "and the Glory of Hashem will be revealed, and all flesh will see together that the mouth of Hashem has spoken.".<\/p>\n
It is explained in Hasidic teachings that in the coming future, "all flesh" will see\u2014the material flesh, the material world itself, will feel that its entire being and existence is the Most High. That is to say, Divine power will be perceived not only through the spiritual faculties of the individual, but also through the material flesh itself. The material world itself will be a vessel for Divine revelation.<\/p>\n
Preparing for it is the revelation of scientific wisdom.<\/p>\n
The primary purpose of science is to be an instrument for serving God, just as everything in the world "was created solely for His Glory."5 (It is only to enable free will that man was given the possibility of using science in other ways, and even in ways completely opposite to its true purpose!) When a Jew uses science for Torah and service to Hashem (which also includes using it to improve the quality of life, enabling him to better fulfill the mission God assigned him in life through Torah and Mitzvot), he prepares the world for its full realization in the time of Messianic revelation, when every detail of the material world will be a vessel for the Divine Presence to dwell within.6.<\/p>\n
REVELATION OF UNITY<\/p>\n
That is why the sciences were specifically revealed at this time, near the arrival of the Messiah, so that the people of Israel would have the opportunity to also use this part of existence for the Torah and Divine service, and thereby prepare the world for the Messianic revelation.<\/p>\n
It is precisely the development of science that brings us closer to a full understanding of God's unity. Previously, it was thought that each of the natural forces was an individual force, and that matter was composed of different, separate elements. Today, we know that at its root, everything emanates from a single fundamental point, which in practice is an expression of Divine unity. This unity will truly be revealed soon, in the true and complete redemption.<\/p>\n
