Out of a total of 613, 74 are mentioned here (more than the 10%...). Moreover, the precepts in this section are not directly related to one another.

In reality, all the mitzvot are interconnected, which is why someone fulfilling one mitzvah is exempt from another. The common thread uniting all the mitzvot is that they are all channels of connection with God. The word mitzvah shares its root with the Aramaic word tzavta, The word "mitzvah" means union: a mitzvah is union with God, the One who commands the commandment. Therefore, viewed from a deeper perspective, if a person is already engaged in a path of union with God, they are exempt from engaging in another.

Despite this relationship between all the Mitzvot, in our parashah There are many mitzvot that are not directly related. However, among the seventy-four mitzvot, we can find several that are oriented toward protecting the orphan, the widow, the poor, or simply the weak (the laws concerning the seduced woman, the raped woman, not charging interest, the worker's right to eat the produce he is working on, the newlywed's prohibition against going to war, the prohibition against taking eating utensils as collateral, the laws concerning kidnappers, not forcibly taking a garment, not keeping a poor person's garment overnight if needed, paying the day laborer upon completion of work, not deferring to the judgment of widows and orphans, and leaving the produce of the field untouched by the poor). Even with animals, the Torah shows mercy, providing the laws concerning lost animals, helping to unload an animal that cannot bear its load, and the prohibition against making animals of different species work together.

(It is important to understand that the reason for these precepts is not Divine mercy, just as it is not the reason for the precept of expelling the mother when taking eggs or young from the nest. The true reason for the precepts is unknown. Even when God Himself writes in His Torah the reason for some mitzvah, it is only the revealed reason so that human beings can understand it, but at its core in the Divine Will, there is a much higher reason, incomprehensible to man.).

Moreover, in parashat Kedoshim, the Torah says (Leviticus 19:14): “Do not curse a fool,” meaning that even a person who is unaware of the treatment they receive, of the curse being inflicted upon them, is still commanded by the Torah not to be mistreated. Clearly, the Torah is concerned about the treatment of the weak.

However, today a story appeared in the newspaper about the beating of a boy at school for being disabled (See note).

It goes without saying that this behavior is not in accordance with the Torah. It goes without saying that we should condemn this kind of thing. The question each of us must ask ourselves is: What can I do about it? Of course, one might think that there's nothing one can do! One isn't a school administrator, not a municipal, provincial, or national education authority, or whatever that may be, so all that's left is to condemn it, and that's it. But it's not that simple. There is a widespread level of violence in society that is alarming. What are we, each of us in our personal lives, doing to reduce and ultimately eradicate this violence? What happened to this boy is an expression of what is happening on the streets, what we see on television and read in the newspapers. And we all contribute to this reality, each of us sharing our thoughts, words, and actions.

So, what we need to reflect on is: What am I doing to reduce the violence within myself? In my dealings with my spouse, my children, my friends, coworkers, etc. When each of us "lowers the volume," as they say, and, of course, adopts a much more Torah-oriented attitude, to bring God to earth, everyone will be better off, because, as the verse says (Proverbs 3:17): "His ways (those of the Torah) are pleasant ways, and all His paths are peace.".

La parashá de esta semana, Ki Tetzé (cuando salgas) está llena, por así decir, de Mitzvot.
