We are very close to the festival of Sukkot. After having gone through the month of Elul, with the proper preparation of personal reflection, Rosh Hashanah, when we crown God as King over ourselves and over the entire world, and Yom Kippur, where we strengthened and revealed our essential connection with God that goes beyond the commandments (because that is what Teshuvah means, repentance; when a person breaks their connection with God through transgressing the Mitzvot, a higher level is required, something that transcends those commandments and has the capacity to repair them in order to reconnect, and that is what Teshuvah means. This does not mean, God forbid, that one should not observe the commandments; it simply means that when a person transgresses, there is a way to correct their mistake, but the normal state of every Jew is the observance of the Torah and its Mitzvot), comes Sukkot, which reveals and expresses that connection in daily life, in worldly affairs.<\/p>\n
To understand this idea, we must appreciate that the Mitzvah of the Sukkah, a shaded booth, is the only Mitzvah where the person enters completely into the Mitzvah (since in the case of the Mezuzah, one does not enter the Mezuzah, but the house where the Mezuzah is located, and in the case of the Mikveh, it only applies in a particular case of impurity and, moreover, the Mitzvah consists of immersing oneself in the Mikveh and then coming out of it, not in staying underwater, unlike the Sukkah where the Mitzvah is to enter and stay inside).<\/p>\n
This concept of entering the Sukkah is even deeper. Our sages say that during the eight days of Sukkot, all tasks must be performed within the Sukkah: eating, drinking, sleeping, praying, studying, etc. (each of these actions with its specific exceptions). In other words, the mitzvah of the Sukkah is not merely being in the Sukkah, which in itself fulfills the obligation, but rather, living one's daily life and worldly affairs within the Sukkah, bringing all one's affairs into the realm of mitzvot.<\/p>\n
This also shows us that every person has the ability to serve God not only through prayer and study, but also through their daily actions.<\/p>\n
That is why the joy of the Sukkot festival is so special, as it carries with it a tiny glimpse of the joy and the way of serving God in the time of the Messiah, when God's presence will be imminent and we will be able to see how He is the constant Creator of the universe and gives life to all creatures, a feeling that will lead to this idea of constant service to God in all matters of life.<\/p>\n
