The other day, while talking with a scientist (a physicist, specifically), we were discussing the effect of a single action on the vastness of the universe. There's a well-known Jewish idea (similar to Chaos Theory) that an individual mitzvah at one end of the globe can positively affect someone at the other.<\/p>\n
But then the discussion turned to the universe. Whether it's expanding or contracting, its size, weight, mass, and so on. Science, based on theories and extrapolations, calculates all these parameters, and truly, the numbers (which I don't recall exactly) are staggering\u2026<\/p>\n
Now then (the conversation went), if the universe is a certain size, what's behind that? In other words, where is it expanding? The scientific answer was, "That doesn't make sense." There is no "place" where the universe is expanding. Science deals with what we can observe or calculate (with one theory or another), but it's pointless to talk about what is incalculable. It's wrong to say we don't know; the correct thing to say is that the question is meaningless.<\/p>\n
It's common to hear that science contradicts the Torah. The truth is, this isn't the case. Generally speaking, science deals with explaining what we see, calculate, and so on, while the Torah also deals with explaining the source of what we see, calculate, and so on.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, a parallel can be found within the discussion itself: what the Torah calls creation ex nihilo\u2014something from nothing\u2014science calls a \u00abmeaningless question.\u00bb In other words, we say that we are \u00absomething\u00bb and God, the Creator, our source, is \u00abnothing\u00bb\u2014because He is incomprehensible, ungraspable.
