To understand the title of this editorial, let's pause for a moment to consider the Hebrew word for foolishness: shtut. This word has a three-letter root: shin, tet, and hei. In Hebrew, two words that share the same root have things in common. Thus, the word sita (whose root is shin, tet, and hei), which means deviation, is strongly linked to the word foolishness. In other words, according to this way of interpreting words, foolishness (shtut) is a deviation (sita).<\/p>\n
Now, one can stray to one side or the other. That is, one can be a fool and stray towards the subhuman \u2013 those behaviors that are not our own, but that we share with animals (such as material and physiological life) \u2013 or one can be a \u00abfool\u00bb and stray towards the superhuman, that is, go beyond what our intellect understands in order to draw closer to God.<\/p>\n
This last type of nonsense is what we are referring to in the title.<\/p>\n
The previous Rebbe, whose death anniversary is the 10th of Shvat, left us a teaching (among many others) that serves as a testament to the work that will bring us out of the diaspora and lead us to final redemption: we must be fools. But of a superhuman kind of foolishness, not subhuman.<\/p>\n
In other words: action is key. Understanding is a complement that allows us to enjoy action more, but the main thing is to act. These days everyone talks about how to improve the world\u2014philosophers, sociologists, great scientists, and scholars\u2014but the most important thing is for each of us to make our practical (not theoretical) contribution, however small, to the global good.
