As we've mentioned many times, one should learn from everything one sees and hears in life (as the Baal Shem Tov said). Even more so from things close to oneself, since that's precisely why they're close, so that one can learn from them.<\/p>\n
My eldest son, Shloime (five years old), loves to draw. Lately, he's added an interesting element to his drawing: he draws things on sheets of paper and cuts them out, then uses them as pieces. He's even gone so far as to draw very large things on several sheets of paper and then chase after the nearest adult and beg them to tape the pieces of his creation together.<\/p>\n
The last of these great feats was a shofar (a horn used on Rosh Hashanah). But not just any shofar, a kudu shofar. And what is a kudu? The kudu is a mammal that lives in Africa and has very large horns (they can measure up to a meter and a half), and the Jews of Teiman use this animal to make their shofars.<\/p>\n
Of course, if Shloime hadn't told me that those three pieces of paper taped together formed a Kudu shofar, one would have thought they were a stretched-out gut, or something like that...<\/p>\n
What do we learn from this episode? Only the creator of something can define its purpose. Shloime knew that gut was a Kudu shofar, and he even sounded it with thunderous shouts...<\/p>\n
One often encounters people who question the purpose of their existence. It's a valid question, but unfortunately, in many cases, the answer is sought in the wrong places or situations.<\/p>\n
From the perspective of the Torah, humankind is a creation of God. This leads us to conclude that only God knows why He created us.
