What parent hasn't had to resort to unconventional methods to calm their rowdy children in the middle of a holiday outing?<\/p>\n
The popular song "Let's go for a ride, in an ugly car, but I don't care, because I've got a cake" echoes in my mind. Even if you've never owned a car, the song still rings true, whether you're on a bus, a catamaran, or a pickup truck.<\/p>\n
The Baal Shem Tov\u2014founder of the Hasidic movement\u2014used to say that one should draw a lesson from everything one sees or hears in service to God. The truth is, this seemingly innocent song contains a profound Jewish life lesson.<\/p>\n
The ride represents earthly life. Our souls descend from their spiritual source to inhabit a physical body, much like a journey through the world. The ugly car is the material world, which is ugly because it prevents us from perceiving the Divine Presence within it. The song continues, "but I don't care, because I'm carrying cake": and what is cake?.<\/p>\n
The cake represents the Mitzvot\u2014the commandments\u2014of our Holy Torah. Just as in the song the cake soothes the suffering of a ride in an ugly car, the Mitzvot are like mystical black holes through which one can connect to another dimension, the spiritual dimension of the ugly car. In other words, each Mitzvah is a sweet treat that allows one to rise above the bitter circumstances of daily life.<\/p>\n
