There is a custom of giving Hanukkah Gelt (Hanukkah money) to children. What lesson does this custom hold?<\/p>\n
Let us reflect a little on money: on the one hand, those who have a lot are considered rich, and those who do not, poor. On the other hand, money itself is not one of the three fundamental needs of human beings\u2014food, clothing, and shelter\u2014but rather, it is through money that one can obtain these needs and, moreover, through it, one can fulfill the mitzvah of charity and benevolence, which is not the case if the money remains unused in one's pocket.<\/p>\n
From this we can draw a fundamental lesson in the education of children (both in age and knowledge): God gave us "a great treasure" - intellectual, emotional and action capacity, only this treasure must be used in its fullness, that is, using the rational potential to study Torah, the emotional to love and fear God and the capacity to act for the practical observance of the Mitzvot.<\/p>\n
When this is the case, the same rule does not apply as with material money, that whoever does not have it is poor: spiritually speaking, everyone can be rich, it only requires the will to use the hidden treasure within each one to the greatest extent possible.<\/p>\n
When this is explained to a child while giving them Hanukkah Gelt, each according to their level and with the appropriate words, and especially when a living example is shown, God will surely bless the giver and the receiver of the money, and the idea of wealth and poverty takes on a new dimension in the person's life.<\/p>\n
