This Shabbat is called Shabbat Shira, the Shabbat of song, because we read in the Torah the song that Moshe sang with the Jewish people after the great miracle of the opening of the Sea of Reeds, after the exodus from Egypt.<\/p>\n
This fantastic event and the song that follows it mark the beginning of the freedom of the Jewish people, allowing them to move on to the next step, the reception of the Torah at Mount Sinai.<\/p>\n
The Alter Rebbe, Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi, founder of the Chabad Lubavitch Movement, wrote: "The tongue is the pen of the heart, but music is the pen of the soul."\"<\/p>\n
The same works in reverse: words have an effect on the heart and music an effect on the soul.<\/p>\n
In simpler terms, music expresses and shapes a person's character and moods, reaching the very depths of their soul. To paraphrase the famous saying, tell me what music you sing or listen to, and I'll tell you who you are.<\/p>\n
We can infer from what has been said and from the order of events that the song was not simply a praise to God for miraculous salvation, but was a fundamental step between slavery in Egypt and the acceptance of the Torah.<\/p>\n
It's not enough to simply be free from an external oppressor (Egypt); we must learn to express our essence and liberate ourselves from our own internal oppressor that prevents us from living in accordance with who we truly are. Music is a tool to achieve this.<\/p>\n
