As mentioned, there are many things that can be learned from football.<\/p>\n
Another thought, based on a talk the Rebbe gave in 1980, concerns the very idea of football. The entire game revolves around putting the ball in the goal. For this, there are two teams, two goals, and one ball.<\/p>\n
This idea has great significance in the daily service of God for Jews: Our sages tell us that the world is in the hands of humankind. As we know, the world is round\u2014there's the rub!<\/p>\n
The teams are two expressions of the person himself, his inclination towards good and his inclination towards evil. The bows are "the King's Bow," holiness, Torah, mitzvot, and "the other bow," everything opposite to good.<\/p>\n
Just as in soccer, each team strives to put the ball into the goal that best suits them. Similarly, the service of a Jew to God consists of taking the world (the ball) and putting it into the "King's Goal"\u2014that is, through Torah and Mitzvot, elevating the world to God's holiness\u2014sanctifying the world.<\/p>\n
In conclusion, Judaism does not teach the annulment or separation of the person from the world around him, but his elevation, as the Baal Shem Tov said, from everything one hears or sees, one must learn a lesson in his service to God.<\/p>\n
