There are two verses in the Torah regarding respect and fear for one's father and mother: 1) "Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long" (Exodus 20:12). 2) "Each of you shall revere your mother and father" (Leviticus 19:3).<\/p>\n
The Talmud (Kiddushin 30b) explains that the Torah equates father and mother in both the respect and awe a child should have for them. However, the verse places honoring the father above honoring the mother because, by nature, a child honors his mother more than his father, and at the same time, the verse places fearing the mother above fearing the father because, by nature, a child fears his father more than his mother.<\/p>\n
How do you earn the respect and fear of your children?<\/p>\n
Respect, by respecting your children. That is, taking them into account, listening to them, keeping the promises you make to them, and keeping your word; no means no and yes means yes.<\/p>\n
Fear, demonstrating integrity.
