The name of the weekly Torah portion is Chukat, which translates as "rule." The topic at hand is the law of the Red Heifer. The Red Heifer was the method by which a person who became ritually impure through contact with a carcass could be purified.<\/p>\n
In general, most of the Torah's commandments have a rational explanation. However, the mitzvah of the Red Heifer does not. Moreover, King Solomon, whom the Torah itself testifies was the wisest man on earth, did not understand the only mitzvah he did! What is so special about this commandment that makes it so incomprehensible?<\/p>\n
The purification ritual using the Red Heifer involves a ritually pure person sprinkling water mixed with the ashes of the Red Heifer onto a ritually impure person. The impure person is purified, and the pure person is made impure.<\/p>\n
This is what is so incomprehensible. If water mixed with ashes can purify someone impure, how can it simultaneously defile someone pure?<\/p>\n
From this we learn a fundamental lesson: sometimes we must put aside our personal interests to help others. Even if this is detrimental to our own situation (material and even spiritual), we must sacrifice ourselves for others.<\/p>\n
