Our sages say that the Jewish people are similar to the moon. The moon's monthly cycle begins with the new moon, grows day by day until it reaches the full moon on the 15th of the month, and from then on, it wanes until it becomes invisible at the end of the month.<\/p>\n
The Jewish people are similar. We are cyclical, and our cycle is like that of the moon. There are two phases in the lunar cycle: 1) growth and 2) waning. Likewise, there are two levels of growth for the Jewish people: 1) revealed development, national identity, and Jewish pride, and 2) diminishment before God, that is, the all-encompassing feeling of connection with God, symbolized by the "reduction" of the individual before God's Omnipresence.<\/p>\n
That is one of the reasons why the Jewish calendar is lunar, and not solar (like the Gregorian). We are like the moon.<\/p>\n
Now that we are approaching Tishrei, the month in which we celebrate Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Sukkot, we are preparing the calendar for the new year, to help raise awareness about Jewish cycles and days.<\/p>\n
Living as Jews is all-encompassing: in space, the synagogue and study halls form a fundamental place in every community. In the soul, the connection with God through the observance of His precepts encompasses every aspect of a person's life.
