In this parashah we learn about the most important event in history: the Giving of the Torah.<\/p>\n
When the Jewish people were encamped at the foot of Mount Sinai, the Torah tells us, "And Israel encamped before the mountain." The entire Jewish people are called Israel, as if they were one single person.<\/p>\n
The Torah teaches us that the world was created by a Creator, and everything was created with a purpose: to reveal the holiness of God.<\/p>\n
In order to achieve this goal of bringing Hashem's unity to the world, we must all be united.<\/p>\n
Each of us has a soul that is "a part of God," and this makes us a nation. When God saw that the entire Jewish people were encamped "as if they were one person, with one heart," He knew it was time to give the Torah.<\/p>\n
However, when we analyze the Giving of the Torah, we see that Moses ascended to the top of Mount Sinai, Aaron and his sons remained a little lower, the elders a little lower still, and the rest of the people at the foot of the mountain. Is this unity?<\/p>\n
Yeah.<\/p>\n
The union between people does not mean that we are all the same, but that we feel close and join our efforts towards a common goal: to follow the laws of the Torah and reveal the holiness of God in the world.<\/p>\n
We can see this in our own bodies. We all have one body, but it's made up of many parts. Each part has a different function, but they are all parts of the same body. When all the parts work together toward a common goal, the body is healthy and strong.<\/p>\n
Similarly, we are all part of one great unity. Living according to the Torah helps us realize that the whole world is truly one.<\/p>\n
