When the Torah was about to be given, God told Moses, \"Thus you shall speak to the house of Jacob and say to the children of Israel.\" \"Who is the House of Jacob?\" the Midrash answers: \"It refers to the women.\" The Midrash adds that with regard to men it is written \u201cand say,\u201d which denotes harshness, whereas with women, one should speak in a gentle and delicate manner. But this is not the only difference. The Mekhilta points out another: God commanded Moses to give the women the general guidelines of the mitzvot (commandments), and the men the details.<\/p>\n
BASES AND RULES<\/p>\n
At first glance, we might think that this devalues women: they are addressed in a delicate manner, and the commandments are given to them succinctly, based on the assumption that they could not delve deeply into or fully understand the intricacies of the Torah. But when we analyze what the Mekhilta says, we will understand everything differently. "Heading of the commandments" does not refer to the "easy" part, but to the essential foundation and fundamental rules. That is to say, God commanded Moses to give women the foundations and norms of the Torah from which all the details of Jewish law, which were then to be transmitted to men, are derived.<\/p>\n
THE VIRTUE OF WOMAN<\/p>\n
The rules and foundations constitute the essence of the Torah. Similarly, the order in which the Ten Commandments were given was ordered accordingly. The first two, "I am God..." and "You shall have no other gods before me," are the essential core of the Torah. The first is the root of the 248 commandments to do, and the second of the 365 commandments not to do (see Tanya I, Chapter 20). Thus, we see that the general rule constitutes the essence of the entire Torah.<\/p>\n
Similarly, women received the essence of the Torah. They were given its fundamental rules and foundations, while men received the details, which constitute a lower level of understanding. Thus, the Torah highlights the virtue of women in the transmission of the Torah.<\/p>\n
FAITH ILLUMINATES<\/p>\n
The reason for the above is that the light of faith and fear of God shines more clearly in women. Hashem created women in such a way that their intellect does not overshadow their personality, thus preventing their faith from being obscured and weakened. This is also why women are linked to the essence of the Torah. And this is also why belonging to the people of Israel depends on the mother and not the father.<\/p>\n
This virtue is also related to the Redemption of the Messiah. Just as in the Exodus from Egypt the Jews were freed from slavery through the merit of the Jewish women of that generation (as our Sages explain), in the same way, "as in the days when you came out of Egypt I will show you wonders," so too will the Messiah come through the merit of the women of Israel. Then we will be able to study the Torah of the Messiah, who will reveal to us all the "general rule" of the Torah, the innermost essence of the Torah, very soon in our days.<\/p>\n
