In this week's section, Vayetz\u00e9 (And He Went Out), it is recounted how Jacob left his home for Haran, in search of the house of his uncle, Laban. On the way, Jacob lay down to sleep on Mount Moriah, where, many years later, the Beit HaMikdash, the Temple, would be built.<\/p>\n
Our sages recount that Jacob, before going to Haran, spent fourteen years in the house of study of Shem and Eber, where he did not sleep a single night. Given this, why did Jacob choose to spend his first rest in such a holy place?<\/p>\n
The idea of sleep symbolizes a profound spiritual descent. Human virtue is expressed when standing: only then can one identify one's head above all else (intellect), one's heart in the middle (emotions), and one's legs below (one's power of action). Whereas when lying down, all limbs become equal.<\/p>\n
In turn, the upper part of the man symbolizes his spiritual side, and the lower part his material side. Normally, the spiritual is above the material, but when he sleeps, both sides are on the same level.<\/p>\n
On the other hand, these differences may be expressing an opposite idea: the differences between head, body, and legs exist within the framework of a limited world, a material world with precise and specific definitions, each level occupying its space. However, before God Himself, who is Infinite, the spiritual and the material are equal.<\/p>\n
This is what Jacob's dream in the sacred place of the Temple symbolizes. Precisely because it was such a holy place, where the very essence of God in His infinity is expressed and revealed, Jacob felt the need to sleep, that is, to show that in the face of that level of divine revelation, the spiritual and the material are equal.<\/p>\n
At that moment, Jacob was given the ability to unite the spiritual with the material, an ability that took shape in the giving of the Torah to his descendants. Just before arriving in Haran, where Jacob would establish the tribes of the Jewish people, he needed this strength to instill it in his sons, who would later have the mission of revealing spirituality within the materiality of the world, bringing God to earth.<\/p>\n
