Day of fasting on which five misfortunes befell the Jewish people:

1) Moshe broke the Tablets of the Law (1313 BCE) after descending from Mount Sinai.

2) Service in the First Temple was interrupted (423 BCE).

3) The wall of Jerusalem was destroyed (69 CE).

4) Apostemus the Wicked held a public burning of the Torah.

5) They placed an idol of idolatry in the Heijal, the holiest place in the Temple.

This day marks the beginning of the ""Three weeks"" a period of mourning for the destruction of the Temples of Jerusalem that culminates on the 9th of Av, with another day of fasting.

When the 17th of Tammuz falls on Shabbat, the fast is moved to the following Sunday.
