What motivates children to not want to go to sleep? To squeeze every last drop out of time. To make the most of every second. Even if it's in an unpleasant way, since they might cry for a long time but still refuse to go to bed, they still use every fraction of time on something (for them) productive.
In this week's Torah portion, we see something similar. When Joseph finally reunites with Jacob, the Torah tells us that he weeps. But Jacob does not. The Midrash tells us that the reason he didn't weep is because he was busy reciting the Shema Yisrael (a prayer about the Oneness of God). So why did Joseph weep? The simplest explanation is that he was emotional. From a deeper perspective, the Zohar tells us that he wept for the destruction of the Temple and for the exile in which we live.
Given this, the question is: why didn't Jacob cry? Didn't he care about our suffering? The answer is quite simple: Jacob was making the most of his time. Jacob saw no place for tears; instead, he needed to act, to work to correct or alleviate the situation. Like children, who don't have time to sleep because when they sleep they can't play, eat, cry, etc.
I love that phrase. God's timing is perfect; everything has its place. Life is a musical score with its silences, its rhythms, and its melody.
