This week's section begins by saying that HaShem promises: "And it shall come to pass that if you hear these laws...that HaShem...will fulfill His promise......He will bless...the fruit of your land, your grain, your wine, your oil, the calves of your cattle and the lambs of your flocks.".
Is this how HaShem rewards us for observing His precepts?
No. Our sages tell us that the reward of a mitzvah is the mitzvah itself. Each mitzvah connects the Jew with God eternally. That is the greatest reward there can be.
In other words: the reward for one mitzvah is the chance to fulfill another mitzvah in the future. As our sages also say: "One mitzvah leads to another mitzvah.".
So why does the Torah speak of all these material things that HaShem promises us for fulfilling mitzvot? Rambam explains: "If you serve God with joy and guard His path, He will give you all these blessings...so that you may be free to increase your Torah wisdom and engage in its study.".
God does not bless us in "payment" for the mitzvot we perform. Just as God is limitless, so are His mitzvot. Therefore, the only just reward for a mitzvah is the mitzvah itself, or the opportunity to perform another mitzvah.
However, HaShem appreciates our effort to fulfill His Mitzvot, and that is why He says: I will make it easier for you; I will bless your house and your business, so that you will not have difficulties. You will be able to dedicate your time and energy to My Mitzvot.
In this way, the reward that HaShem gives us with this blessing is, in reality, the possibility of fulfilling more Mitzvot.
