There is a building whose construction takes precedence over a synagogue. In fact, a synagogue can even be sold to build it. This building is the Mikveh, a ritual bath of water constructed according to the exact specifications expressed in Jewish law (halakha). Immersion in a Mikveh brings about a radical change in one's spiritual state.
Its primary function today is for observing the laws of Family Purity. After a woman's menstrual cycle, she immerses herself in the Mikveh, refreshing herself spiritually to improve herself, her relationship with her husband, and the entire household.
From the beginning of a woman's menstrual cycle until seven days after its end, husband and wife may not engage in any physical contact or even any physical display of affection. After nightfall on the seventh day, the woman visits the mikveh. Today, the mikveh is decorated in the most luxurious way possible, making it a rejuvenating and beautiful experience, which is why many women use it even if they do not participate in other aspects of Jewish observance.
After immersing herself, the woman recites a blessing. Many use this moment to pray and communicate with God. After immersing themselves, the couple may have marital relations.
