This chapter explains the proper etiquette observed by the sages of Israel during meals. It covers the customs of the one cutting the bread to place a portion in the hands of the person eating, especially if that person is in mourning. The one reciting the blessing over the bread may not cut it until salt or an additional meal is brought. On Shabbat and holidays, the blessing is recited over two loaves, provided they can be eaten before the reciter. Conversation is prohibited during meals, and the laws governing the servant's right to eat in front of others are also addressed, along with all the Talmudic laws and customs regarding food. Finally, the law concerning pieces of bread smaller than a kezah is discussed.
