This chapter explains that a person should associate with the righteous, from what point and in what places one should stand before them. It clarifies the difference between a sage, the second in authority (Av Beit Din), and the leader (Nasi) regarding the honor due to them. It addresses how a student who is always before his teacher should stand. It covers whether one should stand before an elder, and that sages should not be charged even the king's tax. If one has merchandise to sell, he has precedence over all others. It addresses who despises sages in life or after their death, whether a sage can excommunicate himself for his own honor, and whether he needs witnesses. It covers all the laws of excommunication and the matters for which one is excommunicated.
