When the Tzemach Tzedek, the third Lubavitcher Rebbe, was a child, his school teacher taught him the verse: "And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt for 17 years," explaining that our sages teach that these were the best 17 years of his life.
Upon his return from school, the Tzemach Tzedek asked his grandfather, the Alter Rebbe, founder of the Chabad Lubavitch Hasidic movement: "How can it be that the best years of Jacob's life were in Egypt, the most impure of all lands?""
The Alter Rebbe replied: "It is written: 'And he (Jacob) sent Judah before him to Joseph to explore the land of Goshen'""
""Rashi quotes the Midrash: Rabbi Nehemiah says that Jacob sent Judah to establish a house of study, so that the tribes could study Torah in Egypt.""
""The word 'explore' is written 'lehorot' in the Torah. The root of the words 'lehorot' and 'Torah' are the same, which means that when a Jew studies Torah, he can have a full and happy life, even in Egypt.".
Not only that, but studying Torah in Egypt, a symbol of all exiles, even the exile in which we find ourselves now, makes the diaspora shine, to make the world a better place and prepare it for swift redemption.
