Ancient philosophers divided the world into four domains of life. Look closely and you will see that they are four domains of transcendence, because to live means to transcend.

The inanimate or silent realm, such as earth, rocks, water, air, and so on. They are all alive, but they do not transcend their boundaries in any way.

Plants transcend their limits by growing.

Animals transcend their limitations by moving. Unlike plants, they are not tied to the place where they grow and can move.

And how do human beings transcend our limitations? Transcendence through words. Through dialogue. Of all creatures, only we are capable of listening to ourselves through the ears of others.
