Human nature is simply to react, to give others back the same medicine they have been given.
This is what Rava, a sage of the Talmud, advised: ignore the need to return evil with evil, pain with pain, disdain with disdain, and heaven will ignore your disdain, the pain you caused, your deeds that were not good.
God imitates man. Go beyond your nature with others and He will do the same with you.
