This week, local media reported the story of a woman who obtained a court order to undergo gender reassignment surgery. She was subsequently transformed into a man.
A university professor told me that the judge who authorized the intervention argued that the actions of individuals, as long as they do not affect other people, are, so to speak, private.
However, the reality is that the physiology of the body is only a reflection of the spiritual qualities of the person.
The Torah tells us that the first woman was named Eve because she was "The mother of all human beings" (from the Hebrew word chayá – she who gives life). Therefore, her body contains the elements necessary to give life.
The simple proof of this concept is that a blind person can have a child who can see. The quality of sight is a potential of the soul that is invested in the eye to see, but it does not essentially depend on the eye.
It follows from this that one is what one is, and one must learn to live with that and refine oneself. The body? It's a detail, an expression of the true self. I hope this doesn't set a legal precedent, so that if someone wants to become a horse, they'll be authorized to have surgery…
