The Torah scroll contains 304,805 letters, each one written by a highly trained and skilled scribe in black ink on parchment. If a single letter were defective or missing, the entire scroll would be unusable.
Another important law regarding the Torah scroll is that each letter must be surrounded by a blank space on the parchment. If one letter touches another, even by a fraction of a millimeter, thus violating the "blank space" between them, the entire scroll is disqualified from use until it is corrected.
Every Jew is a letter in God's scroll. Our sages say that if a single Jewish soul had not been present at Mount Sinai, the Torah would not have been given. The Jewish people are a single, interdependent entity. The absence or deficiency of a single soul causes a deficiency or deficiency in the entire people.
However, equally important is the inviolable "blank space" that distinguishes each and every one of us as a unique individual. Often, a strong sense of community and mission obscures the differences among members of a group. The Torah says: Yes, my hundreds of thousands of letters convey a message of unity and wholeness. Yet this message encompasses hundreds of thousands of voices, each articulating itself in its own way and through its own means. To diminish the individuality and uniqueness of one is to affect the integrity of the collective whole."
