In this parashah the Torah teaches us that the fulfillment of Mitzvot brings us a reward both in this world and in the world to come, and that the lack of observance of Mitzvot brings spiritual and material punishment.
However, even though the Jewish people are not in the spiritual state that God expects of us, the Torah says: "Even then, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not abhor them or despise them so as to destroy them and break My covenant with them; for I am the Lord their God." God never abandons us or forgets us, regardless of our actions.
