A feature of modern life is the practice of purchasing insurance against a variety of unforeseen circumstances. When a person buys an insurance policy, he or she is, in effect, joining a group of people who have agreed to be responsible for one another's misfortunes. If one of them suffers a loss, God forbid, he or she is compensated from the funds generated by the premiums paid by all.
The lesson to be learned is obvious: if such consensus can be reached regarding material matters, how much more should it be applied to our moral and spiritual questions. We should all consider ourselves part of a universal mutual fund: if a human being lacks something, be it food and shelter or knowledge and guidance, even if they are on the other side of the globe and we have never heard their name or the name of the city where they live, it is the responsibility of each of us to meet their need.
